Istituto Marangoni London School of Fashion and Design registered as Istituto Marangoni Ltd (London School) at 30 Fashion Street E1 6PX (VAT number 810274857) (“Istituto Marangoni”) has established a scholarship programme with a business partner Diamond Producers Association to support one student per year during their masters course at Istituto Marangoni (“Scholarship”). These Scholarship Competition Terms and Conditions (“Scholarship Terms”) are supplementary to the General Terms and Conditions for Students and should be read carefully in conjunction with the General Terms before submitting a Scholarship application.

By submitting a Scholarship application to Istituto Marangoni you agree to be bound by the Scholarship Terms and General Terms.

In particular, you should carefully read and consider the termination rights at section 10 below.

1. Eligibility Requirements

Applicants will be eligible for consideration for the Scholarship if they meet the following criteria. Applicants must:

a) be a prospective UK, EU, Tier 4 International Istituto Marangoni student who has applied for and met the general requirements for a qualifying Masters degree course (see list set out below);

b) be liable to pay the full tuition fees applicable for your jurisdiction (for example, you are not a sponsored student); and

c) achieve the minimum academic standards set out below.

Qualifying courses: full-time one-year Masters degree course in Fine Jewellery Design at Istituto Marangoni London starting in October 2020.

Minimum academic standards: applicants must have achieved a 2:1 or 1st class honours degree classification (or non-UK equivalent such as merit or distinction) in a relevant undergraduate course. Non-native English speakers are required to provide an English language certificate at b2 CEFR level (ielts 6.5 without elements below 5.5)

2. Application procedure

Portfolio work

Applicants must submit a portfolio consisting of the following 2 digital documents, uploaded as 1 single pdf :

  • Document 1 - Project Interpretation: Include your reference research and your own interpretation the project theme listed below. Describe the design goal that you want to achieve through your project. (Max 400 words overall); and
  • Document 2 - Creative Work: Show your project through imagery, structured as one mood board (with a title of the collection) and 8 design sketches. Sketches must be two per page (max) and scanned in 300dpi resolution.

Project theme:

Fine Jewellery Design: Produce 8 x sketches, a mood board and a 400 word description for a collection of original fine diamond jewellery that reflects the proposed theme: “redeFINE jewellery – The collection should revisit the beautiful story, value and uniqueness of natural diamonds: their provenance, nature, the billion years journey each diamond has been on. The designs should inspire the wearer to reconnect with a sense of rarity and history - a finite resource, a diamond is after all the oldest object a person will ever touch or own. Each diamond is unique, like each one of us, like our fingerprints. Be inventive and experimental, push boundaries and create a collection that will become a future classic that empowers authenticity and self-expression.

The successful applicant will demonstrate an understanding of ethical sourcing and production processes. The modern natural diamond mining industry has undergone widespread global positive social and environmental change over the past 20 years and continues to improve. In May 2019, an independent report done by TruCost assessed the environmental and socio-economic impact of DPA’s members mining activities, which can be viewed here.

Additional documentation

The following documents must also be submitted as part of the application process:

  • Copy of university undergraduate degree certificate or equivalent
  • Copy of university academic transcript or equivalent – each transcript submitted must include clarification on the grading scale / range of grades possible for that degree
  • Scanned copy of valid passport
  • Signed personal statement
  • 2 reference letters - one reference letter should relate to your most recently completed university programme/degree 
  • CV
  • Copy of certificate and results for IELTS for UKVI (Academic) test (where applicable)

All sections of the application and documentation submitted must be submitted in English. Documents which are originally not in English should be accompanied by a certified translation.

No fee is payable to submit a Scholarship application.

Applicants may only submit portfolio work that has been completed as an individual. Group submissions are not permitted.

3. Application deadline and other key dates

  • April 15th, 2020: Deadline for submission of the portfolio work and all additional documents listed. Applications received after this deadline or incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • April  20th, 2020: Meeting of the Assessment Panel to select the successful applicant.
  • April  26th, 2020: Notification of the applicant selected for the Scholarship.

4. Assessment Panel

The Assessment Panel will be composed of industry professionals, including one Istituto Marangoni and two Diamond Producers Association representatives (“Assessment Panel”).

The Assessment Panel’s decision is final.

5. Evaluation criteria

Each application will be assessed by the Assessment Panel against the following categories:

  • Consistency with the brief in the Project Themes above
  • Innovation and excellence in execution
  • Validity of the proposal from an aesthetic and functional point of view
  • Synthesis and clarity of the concept

6. Intellectual Property Rights in your Portfolio

In submitting a Scholarship application, you warrant that the content of your portfolio is your original work and has not been entirely or partially copied from any other third party work, source or material, and to your reasonable knowledge, does not infringe any copyright of any third party, save for inspiration by Diamond Producers Association work.

In the event that any aspect or part of your portfolio belongs to a third party (other than Diamond Producers Association), you must credit such work appropriately and ensure that any necessary permission and/or authorisation to use and submit it as part of your application has been obtained.

If you create any intellectual property rights in your Scholarship application, the standard position is that you will own such rights, unless you and Istituto Marangoni agree otherwise.

7. Value: benefits and duration

One applicant will be selected by the Assessment Panel for the Scholarship, with a second place applicant placed on reserve. Scholarships are awarded in the form of a tuition fee deduction. No cash alternatives are provided. The applicant selected for the Scholarship (the “Recipient”) shall be granted a 50% deduction on their tuition fee (enrolment fee is due) for the relevant one year Masters course at Istituto Marangoni in London. The Scholarship deduction is only applicable to the tuition fee and excludes all other charges such as enrolment fees, living costs and ancillary items required as part of the course. The Recipient shall be responsible for covering all such other costs.

The Scholarship cannot be accepted in conjunction with any other deductions provided by Istituto Marangoni.

The Scholarship is awarded for courses at the London campus only and is not transferrable to any other Istituto Marangoni campus or location. The Scholarship is for courses starting in October 2020 and cannot be deferred. If you are offered the Scholarship and then choose to defer your place, the offer of the Scholarship will be withdrawn and you will have to re-apply or will be reconsidered for the Scholarship again the following year.

8. Award of the Scholarship

The Scholarship is conditional upon the Recipient meeting the course eligibility requirements and receiving formal acceptance from Istituto Marangoni of a place on the relevant course.

If the Recipient is an International Tier 4 Student, the Scholarship offer is also conditional on a valid visa being obtained from UK Visa and Immigration. The visa must commence and the student must enter the UK by the course start date. The visa must also be valid for duration of the course. “International Tier 4 Student” means a student who requires a Tier 4 visa to study in the United Kingdom.

Istituto Marangoni reserves the right to withdraw the Scholarship offer if the Recipient does not meet these conditions in section 8.

9. Acceptance of the Scholarship award

Istituto Marangoni will notify the Recipient in writing that they have been selected, by way of an award letter enclosing a copy of these Scholarship Terms. The “Scholarship Agreement” will comprise the Recipient’s application form, the award letter and these Scholarship Terms. It is a condition of accepting the Scholarship that the Recipient accepts the terms of the Scholarship Agreement.

The Recipient must confirm their acceptance by returning a signed copy of the award letter within 20 working days of receiving it, after which time the Scholarship offer will expire. Istituto Marangoni reserves the right to award the Scholarship to the reserve applicant if the offer is declined or expires.

10. Publicity

If the Recipient opts into the publicity statement on the application form, Istituto Marangoni may publish the Recipient’s profile and news of the Scholarship award on its website and related platforms.

By accepting the Scholarship Terms, the Recipient agrees to assist with and participate in a reasonable number of open days and public appearances for the 6 purpose of promoting the Istituto Marangoni and partnership programme with Diamond Producers Association. Istituto Marangoni may also request marketing assistance from time to time, which may include photographic images, video recordings, audio recordings or quotes from the Recipient, contribution to prospectuses, school publications, annual reports, newsletters, course literature, advertisements, social media and websites. The Recipient hereby assigns to Istituto Marangoni any intellectual property and other rights that are created as part of this promotional role.

11. Termination

The Scholarship Agreement is dependent on the continuation of the contract for study between Istituto Marangoni and the Recipient (the “Study Contract”). If the Study Contract is terminated for any reason, the Scholarship Agreement shall terminate automatically. Istituto Marangoni may terminate the Scholarship Agreement on [one month’s] written notice at any time if the Recipient is in material breach of the Scholarship Agreement.

Istituto Marangoni may also terminate the Scholarship Agreement [immediately] on written notice at any time if:

  • the Recipient decides to discontinue studying the course that the Scholarship is associated with;
  • other than in exceptional circumstances, if the Recipient takes a break from studying or defers the completion of their course for any reason; or
  • Istituto Marangoni is of the reasonable opinion that the Recipient has made an intentional misrepresentation in his or her application for the Scholarship.

12. Information on the treatment of personal data

These Scholarship Terms should be read in conjunction with 'Terms of Use and Privacy' notice.

13. General

Istituto Marangoni may update these Scholarship Terms from time to time. Applicants should make sure that they read the current version before submitting an application.
