CONTEMPORIZING TRADITION · ISTITUTO MARANGONI MUMBAI

1. Intro

Istituto Marangoni constantly continuing collaboration with media partner, aimed at supporting talent and creativity. In the recent past years, Istituto Marangoni developed projects with Elle India & Elle Décor for Fashion and Design Areas.

Marangoni Next Generation Scouting initiative are aimed at students or aspiring students, and offers the opportunity to obtain scholarships consisting in a 50% deduction on the tuition fee for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes of Istituto Marangoni Schools.

Sara Maino Creative Talent Curator is part of the project, and her role covers world-wide any scholarship project.

Intake of Reference: August 2023 of Mumbai School.

2. Project Brief

CONTEMPORIZING TRADITION

India’s rich heritage of traditional crafts is known and used by many designers locally and globally. The new fashion consumers’ ‘wokeness’ demands stories and transparency of the process and are environmentally and socially conscious. Aspiring students are invited to submit a proposal to preserve and contemporise Indian crafts in a socially and environmentally responsible context.

Participants should develop their projects by taking an imaginative, problem-solving approach.

3. Application

Participation in the Initiative is free: each candidate can submit only one application in the designated School by uploading the required documents on the dedicated Scholarship platform.

Applications consist in submitting all requested documents to the dedicated platform (https://scholarships.istitutomarangoni.com/) no later than April 6th, 2023.

The scholarship is valid only for the intake of August 2023 of Mumbai School. The list of courses and required documents to submit are available in next paragraphs.

In order to submit the application, candidates will need to:

  • go the dedicated web page;
  • fill out all fields with their personal data;
  • select the School/Programme they wish to apply for;
  • submit all the required documents;
  • in case they are applying for a three-year course, complete the Skill Test;
  • read and accept the privacy terms and conditions.
  • click on submit and wait for email of confirmation.

The commission won’t consider incomplete applications and students already enrolled in other courses and or in other Schools.

Candidates will receive a confirmation e-mail for the application submitted. If you do not receive a confirmation email, please contact the email address scholarships@istitutomarangoni.com no later than 24 hours after submission of the application.

To participate in the Initiative, applicants are also requested to upload a list of documents, according to their course of interest, in addition to the project itself.

4. Documents to submit

For an application to be valid, applicants will have to submit specific documents, which differ depending on whether they are applying for an Undergraduate or Postgraduate course, and on the specific course they have chosen.

1) For Undergraduate Progression Programmes:

  • A Special Project (as described in the project Programmes paragraph below).
  • Copy of passport/ID
  • Signed personal statement
  • Copy of high school diploma and school certificates
  • CV

Following the upload of the required documents on the scholarship platform, students applying for a three-year course, will be required to complete a brief skill test.

2) For Postgraduate Programmes:

  • Special Project (as described in the project Programmes paragraph below).
  • Copy of passport / ID
  • Copy of university degree and transcript, or a reference
  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Portfolio (only for postgraduate creative courses)

5. Programmes

Scholarships are aimed at Istituto Marangoni Undergraduate and Postgraduate candidates, applying to the School mentioned above.

Please note that in case of Mumbai Undergraduate Progression Programmes the deduction is valid for block 1.

Depending on the Programme chosen for the application, the following must be submitted along with the other required documents:

Undergraduate progression Programme in FASHION DESIGN: Develop a series of design ideas that show new ways of using or adapting a traditional Indian craft skill in contemporary fashion garments – this may be through a capsule collection of 6 looks or in a fashion product line of 12 garments/artefacts. Applicants must create clear illustrations of each outfit and must include a mood-board that summarizes the inspiration for the collection and research pages that show where ideas originated from and how applicant have developed their own original design ideas.

Undergraduate progression Programme in FASHION BUSINESS: Applicants must formulate a business idea based on traditional Indian craft/s in a contemporary fashion or design scenario and propose a project connected to the local market and business practices.

Undergraduate progression Programme in FASHION STYLING: Applicants must propose a concept for a fashion photoshoot promoting traditional Indian crafts to a contemporary consumer (Gen Z) that will run in a luxury fashion magazine. Applicants must include their research, concept/mood board and story (text).

Undergraduate progression Programme in INTERIOR DESIGN: Applicants must interpret the identity of the Indian local craft heritage, in an innovative and contemporary context, developing a storytelling for a residential space through an interior design proposal. The project will be presented through a visual research (topic identification), sketches (concept formulation), and final piece rendering images (made by hand or by computer).

Undergraduate progression Programme in PRODUCT DESIGN: Applicants must identify a cultural topic relevant to the Indian context and use it as a reference to design a piece of furniture. The piece must be detailed-oriented and content-informed with a use of a recognizable aesthetic language. The project will be present through a visual research (topic identification), sketches (concept formulation), and final piece rendering images (made by hand or by computer).

Postgraduate Programme in LUXURY BRAND MANAGEMENT AND DIGITAL MARKETING: Applicants must submit a proposal for the creation of a luxury brand based on one or more traditional Indian craft targeted to a global consumer. The proposal should include your market research and a brand identity creation.

Postgraduate Programme in FASHION AND TEXTILE DESIGN MANAGEMENT: Applicants must submit a proposal to innovate two traditional Indian craft of your choice for a global consumer. They should provide the in depth research into the craft and its context and develop a series of original design ideas. By showing their process, they should provide illustrations of the final ideas.

The projects can be developed in different formats: video animations, PowerPoint presentations, a portfolio of prototypes enriched by music or voice-over, slideshow/gallery of images, the evolution of their idea in stop-motion or even a simple video story of the candidate.

6. Application Process

Applications consist in submitting all requested documents to the dedicated platform (https://scholarships.istitutomarangoni.com/) no later than April 6th, 2023.

In order to submit the application, candidates will need to:

  • go the dedicated web page;
  • fill out all fields with their personal data;
  • select the School/Programme they wish to apply for;
  • submit all the required documents;
  • in case they are applying for a three-year course, complete the Skill Test;
  • read and accept the privacy terms and conditions.

The commission won’t consider incomplete applications and students already enrolled or not in compliance with the necessary prerequisites.

7. Evaluation Process

To reach a final list of promising candidates, the evaluation of the Designed Commission (composed of 5 representatives) is fundamental.

This way, they will be able to review the documents and the special project submitted by the applicant.

The evaluation will be made considering the following aspects:

  • Coherence of objective.
  • Level of innovation.
  • Project feasibility and aesthetic approach.
  • Overall quality.
  • Ability to synthesize information and clarity of the project.  

8. Dates

  • 14th March 2023 > Competition to go live
  • 6th April 2023> Deadline for the Last registration
  • 14th April 2023 > Final Jury Decision
  • 17th April 2023 > Final 2 winners (1 Undergraduate Progression Programme & 1 Postgraduate Programme) will be announced

The decision of the Special Commission is final.

9. Scholarship Acceptance

Awarded candidates will be asked to confirm the acceptance of the offered deduction within 3 working days and to pay the due enrolment fee within 5 working days from the day of the acceptance. If the chosen candidate does not provide feedback and the payment of the enrolment fee, the conditional offer will not be considered as accepted and the offer will automatically expire.

By accepting the deduction and enrolling into an Istituto Marangoni Programme, the candidate implicitly accepts to become an Istituto Marangoni Scholarship testimonial for the following Campaigns, where requested. The regular attendance of the course as well as the maximum commitment on the part of the deduction recipient will be a binding requisite to obtain the final certificate. The possible decision on the part of the participant to postpone his/her participation to the Course will automatically lead to the cancellation of the deduction assigned. In case the selected Istituto Marangoni course is not activated for the designed intake in the School of choice, the applicant may be offered to use the deduction to enroll into the same course in another Istituto Marangoni School. Alternatively, the applicant may be offered a similar course in the chosen School.

10. Award

  • 2 scholarships consisting of 50% reduction on the tuition fee (enrolment fee is due) for the Undergraduate & Postgraduate Progression Programme that will be held at the Mumbai Training Center of Fashion and Design of Istituto Marangoni in Mumbai, starting in August 2023*.
  • 10 scholarships consisting of up to 15% reduction on the tuition fee (enrolment fee is due) for the Undergraduate & Postgraduate Progression Programme that will be held at the Mumbai Training Center of Fashion and Design of Istituto Marangoni in Mumbai, starting in August 2023*.

*Any scholarship allocated to the intake for which the student is enrolling (e.g. August ’23) will NOT be automatically valid and confirmed for the next intake (e.g. August ’24). The Management together with the Jury will assess (and possibly confirm) any potential reassignment. For those applying to Undergraduate progression courses: any deduction awarded is applied only to the first level of the study. Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis.
